Joanna moves to the small town of Flinstead with her young son Alfie after her marriage falters. She stays with her mother and soon hears a rumor about child killer Sally McGowan living nearby. Eager to fit in with the local mothers, Joanna shares the gossip, sparking widespread paranoia and suspicion among the community. The rumor spreads rapidly through school playgrounds and online forums, turning neighbors into amateur detectives. Joanna juggles her estate agent job, Alfie's school troubles, and a custody battle with her estranged husband Michael. Community events escalate mistrust, with innocent residents facing public confrontation and isolation.
