The series focuses on the time Sokolov spent in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp, also known as Auschwitz. The man found himself there in 1942. Soon, the man was assigned to give identification number tattoos to other prisoners. Lala had to tattoo dozens of people. One of these people turned out to be a girl named Gita. She became Sokolov's lover and helped him survive the inhumane conditions of the concentration camp. Sixty years after these events, an elderly Lale tells her story to writer Heather Morris.
